It is hard to understand these things. My own visceral experiences are what showed me the truth of the Torah. What if someone didn't have those experiences?

Well that's a difficult place to be in. There was a certain time in this man's process where he was very excited by and believed in Torah. But since his exposure to Torah that gave him that impression may not have been totally intellectuall honest with him, it ended up being something which could be knocked down when things got difficult. That's why I mentioned his profession. When you have a desire to do soemthing, the mind will search out ways to rationalize that desired way.
